A Special Visit from Mika the Therapy Dog

Residents at Kingsacre Care Home were treated to a lovely visit from Mika, a gentle and affectionate therapy dog, whose presence brought plenty of smiles to the home. Therapy animals like Mika play an important role in care homes, providing companionship, reducing stress, and lifting the spirits of residents, and Mika’s visit was no exception.
Our residents had the chance to stroke, cuddle, and interact with Mika, who has quickly became a firm favourite at Kingsacre Care Home in Duntocher. The soft, friendly black retriever made herself at home, offering a calming presence to everyone she met. As she padded around the rooms, tails wagging and ears perked, she created moments of pure happiness, whether sitting patiently beside a resident’s chair for a gentle stroke or resting her head on a welcoming lap.

For many, Mika’s visit brought back fond memories of pets they once had. Some residents were keen to meet Mika straight away and others who initially observed from a distance, soon found themselves reaching out to gently pat Mika’s head, keen to make a new friend. These small but meaningful interactions highlight the incredible emotional benefits of pet therapy.
Studies have shown that therapy animals can help reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and even improve social interaction among care home residents. For those living with dementia, the soothing nature of animals can provide reassurance, ease agitation, and spark moments of connection. Simply having a furry friend to sit beside them can bring feelings of warmth and relaxation.
The visit was particularly special for residents who may not always engage in group activities. Mika’s quiet companionship provided a sense of calm, and her non-judgemental presence allowed residents to interact in their own time and way. Whether it was a bright smile, a shared story about past pets, or a moment of peaceful companionship, Mika left a lasting impression on everyone at Kingsacre.

As the visit came to an end, residents and staff alike were already looking forward to Mika’s next visit. We are so grateful for the wonderful work therapy dogs like Mika do.
